Addressing athlete wellbeing isn’t about adding one more thing to an already packed plate; it’s about learning how to respond to what’s already on there.
Success in sport is measured by wins, losses and championship rings, no doubt - it’s why we compete. And, defining success in sport solely by stats, stops the story short. Because underneath every single athlete who competes - from NFL Hall of Famers to Olympic Gold Medalists to the youth hockey players learning to skate - is a human.
Mental wellbeing may be a complex key performance indicator to measure, but complex doesn’t make it secondary.
It’s time to unlock a new level of performance by honoring the whole athlete.

“Leaders must either invest a reasonable amount of time attending to fears and feelings, or squander an unreasonable amount of time trying to manage ineffective and unproductive behavior.”
― Brené Brown, Dare to Lead: Brave Work
As sports parents, coaches, and other sport professionals, we are the leaders on the frontline:
5 of 5 athletes have mental health;
1 in 5 is experiencing a diagnosable mental illness;
Less than 10% will reach out for help, compared to 40% of their non-athlete peers. (UM / NCAA, 2014)
As adults who play a central role in the development of young people, it is critical to be equipped and empowered with the skill set and supports to recognize and respond when such challenges arise.
WholeHealth Sport is here to help.
We’ve built the infrastructure to change the narrative on mental well-being in sport.
Synthesizing our years of expertise in sport and metal wellbeing, Olympic Gold Medalist Samantha Arsenault Livingstone, M.Ed., National Trainer of Mental Health First Aid Lynn Hennighausen, MS. and Performance Coach Dr. Katie Kilty created WholeHealth Sport to equip sport parents, coaches and other sport professionals with the training, skills and support needed to change the narrative, culture and game regarding mental wellbeing in sport.
We go beyond checking the box.
We believe that in order to change the narrative we need to increase mental health awareness through the completion of the Mental Health First Aid course and participation in a dedicated space for on-going skill development and a network of support.
Our sport specific Mental Health First Aid course teaches how to identify and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges in the sport space.

“Taking MHFA with other coaches has provided me the tools and strategies that I know I need to better serve my athletes, parents, volunteers and staff. The class helped me develop new pathways for developing meaningful connections that will help our staff better engage our swimmers during times of mental health challenges or crises.”
-Mike Murray Coach, Victor Swim Club Owner, Warrior High Performance Lessons, USA Swimming Coach ASCA Level 5, 15 years of coaching
“MHFA training is immensely valuable and timely for coaches at all levels. So many athletes are struggling silently, especially now. An MHFA-trained coach can be the trusted adult who notices and makes a life-changing difference.”
-Susan Stout, J.D., Founder, Own Beat Athlete
